Is this Melbourne or Prague?

I never really noticed it until recently, but there is a very strong European influence in the roof design of the older buildings around Fitzroy in Melbourne.

It reminded me of Prague, where we spent some time in October last year.

Fitzroy Favourites

On this trip to Melbourne we stayed in Fitzroy, and as my daughter, son-in-law and their 6 month old baby were with us we just mooched around Fitzroy and Collingwood for most of the time, with a brief excursion to the Camberwell Markets on the Sunday morning.

Here are a few of the places we frequented:

 Little Creatures on Brunswick Street - the lights are actually bunches of beer bottles

 Hook'd on Brunswick - the best fish cafe ever (and a great mural)

A mystery cafe with no name in a garage down a laneway off Johnston Street - so Melbourne!

Brooklyn Arts Hotel, Fitzroy

Here are some glimpses of the wonderful hotel I stayed in when I was in Melbourne this time.

It reminded me of when I was little and used to go and stay at my grandparents house - cosy feather beds, feather doonas, feather pillows and blissfully, no televisions, radios or telephones in the rooms.  It is an oasis of peace and quiet - the only sound being the pitter patter of Bess and Budd (the resident dogs) on the garden path.

Out and About in Wintry Melbourne

I am just back from another trip to Melbourne.  This time I stayed in Fitzroy where there are no end of interesting things to photograph.

This asymmetric roofline on Gertrude Street reminded me of Gaudi's architecture.

This place is amazing - they print digital images onto ceramic tiles which they make themselves and then frame in recycled wood.  You can send them your own image and they will print it for you.
